Scottie:
Sean loves the skewering of Lane Coutell. It gives him, presumably,
a delicious feeling of superiority or perhaps an even more
deliciously
masochistic sense of self-identification. And, of course, everyone
pisses
themselves at the thought of Muriel's mother. You can certainly
hear
Salinger giggling in the background.
No, definitely not a feeling of superiority. In Lane, I see the men who
eventually grow up to lead the world. Smart, confident, competitive,
well-liked, company men. Winners.
Nor is there any sort of masochistic self-identification with Lane. For
better or worse, I'm much too sensitive to fit in with his crowd.
I appreciate Franny because it rings true.
