I can see Salinger being a notorious smoker of Lucky Strike cigarettes, his
house littered by old lighters in purposefully random drawers. Then, at about
60 or so he had an infusion of mortality when he realized that he better
quit, and he did so reluctantly. But his drapes in the living room, and the
carpet in the sitting room that he rarely even ventures into any more are
still thick with the shadowy, jaundiced smoke, still lingering from all those
years. And he'll go out and buy pack, only vowing again the next week to
never smoke again. That's how I imagine him anyway, because I imagine him to
be much like my old English teacher, Mr.Banton. The kind of person who would
stay in hiding just to show that he was better at it than the unabomber.
