How important are numbers to Salinger? "Nine" of Nine Stories seems
to resist interpretation and says to me, read each as a short story.
I think somewhere in Eberhard Alsen's book, he mentions that
"Inverted Forest" was considered for the collection which would have
then been Ten Stories. I don't get an overall sense that Salinger was
making meaning with numerology but I could be wrong. Salinger's
fiction, in my opinion, is great enough to contain many things that
are not immediately seen or known, and which reveal new meaning over
time with different readers. will
