I'd like to point out that it's missing the point to blame Bush and
Ashcroft and the Big Bad Republicans in charge for all this. They're
giving us what they perceive the majority of Americans want. And believe
me...lots of people do want this. We criticize them for not taking
sufficient action (remember all that stuff about FBI memos not long ago --
never mind that every single hijacking in US history had always been for
ransom, and as a result pilots were trained to cooperate with
terrorists...we're talking about a major paradigm shift that was supposed
to be implemented based upon a little bit of intelligence and one study) to
prevent Sept. 11th, so now to avoid looking like they're not doing enough
they're doing everything they can think of. At this point, we're still
pulling the strings. Public opinion created this situation and can reverse
it.
The real problem isn't with the government trying to take more power (they
always do), but with the people who want them to. Hitler, we should never
forget, had incredible popular support at least at one time.
