well, yes. we know jds knew and loved rilke's work.
the first mention of rilke is in 'the stranger' from
1945. and, well, let me stop myself right here.
seymour's doll in his final haiku might/must contain a
reference to rilke's 4th duino elegy. but i just
wonder if jds also remembered that rilke's last words
to the world were cast in a haiku format.

i've always liked the rollcall below. but note that
no haiku poets--or scott fitzergald, for that
matter--are included. hmmm.

1951 is probably too early for the japanese and
chinese poets anyway.
