All right, Kim, I'll rise to the bait. First, Ted, though he had his
problems, was a lovely man. I knew him, though honestly I'm not trying to
name drop. His sensitivity surrounded him like an aura. Secondly, barring
some sinister Gaslight-style visciousness, it is I dare say impossible to
drive someone to suicide. Third, I've never seen anywhere where his
mistress took the plunge. Fourth, though I adore Sylvia Plath's work, and I
believe I've read it all, including the journals, I do know that it is
possible to drive someone to infidelity. before you jump on that one, allow
me to illucidate.
Though infidelity, like suicide, is a choice, it has in the past few years
come to my attention that due to one spouse's churlish behavior, the mate is
driven to outside solace, which often leads to infidelity. I have a couple
who are close friends who explained this to me. He takes at least equal
blame for her fling because of who he was, driving her away. They've since
both done a world of changing and they're happier than ever. Sadly, if only
one partner wishes the change, the relationship is doomed. Is Ted
blameless? Of course not. Still, can you imagine how difficult it was for
a woman like Sylvia to be a happy mate? Perhaps if she'd have been born 15
years later, the 70's would have made her happier, but alas.
Suffice it to say that the union was not a happy one, and she would have, in
all likelihood, have gassed herself no matter who she married. Oh, by the
way, the way she staged it, she probably didn't intend to die, she set it up
to be found in time, but there was a snafu.
End of speech.
