I really don't know much about Hip-Hop or Rap beyond what I've read in
student papers, but I did attend a Maya Angelou poetry reading at UCF in
the mid 1990s. She read a poem from the 1920s that read just like a
modern rap song.
What's interesting about rap and Hip-Hop is that the words are meant to
be spoken, and when done well can often stand alone, without musical
accompaniment. I'd still call these "songs" -- poetry with sufficient
lyrical quality to be read aloud, poetry that provides its own music.
What was also interesting was that Angelou sang many of her own poems.
She has a nice voice.
