>>I was given a book for Christmas called 'One Hundred
>>Years of Solitude' by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It looks very ominous, and
>>I haven't got around to reading it yet, and I thought I'd ask if I
>>should.

Helena - You should definately read it! It is an amazing book in my
opinion and I've come across many people who say that book has had a
serious impact on their lives. It's extremely well-written . . . oh but
it was hard at first to remember all the names of the different
characters and keep in mind how they were related - ther's a daunting
family tree diagram at the beginning of the book but it all falls into
place later. Also, I'd highly recommend another Gabriel Garcia Marquez
book called "Love in the Time of Cholera." Well worth a read. Also has
anyone ever read "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. It's kind of a follow
your heart and your dreams/things happen for a reason type book. It's a
simple and quick read and it's especially good if you happen to be at a
point in your life where you are really confused about the future and
don't know if you should just take off and move somewhere (which is
actually how everyone i know seems to feel). Have any of you read it?
>>totally unrelated to the above ramblings. . . i'm considering a move to
ireland within >>the year, have any advice?

Matthew - I would highly encourage moving to Ireland. I moved here from
the US a year ago (I'm in Dublin) and it was definately the right
decision. I really think life here is quite different from living in the
US - it is a much more relaxed atmosphere. The best way I can describe
it is that in the US I think most people Live To Work whereas in Ireland
I think most people Work To Live. Over here you can go to a pub any
night of the week and it will be packed with people just enjoying
themselves whereas in the US I remember if I ever went to a bar on a
weeknight chances were that it would never be full and most people were
really worried about being ok to get up for work the next day. I swear
my stress level has plummeted since I arrived here and I really take time
to enjoy life a lot more now. What would you do over here (work?
school?)? I've been working here for the past year and will be going to
graduate school here in October. I don't know how you would like living
here but of all the Americans I've encountered here I've never met one
who was unhappy living here (although almost every Irish friend I have
would give almost anything to move to the US - funny, isn't it?). If you
do move here I'd suggest doing it after august and september because
finding housing here can be a bastard of a task. Good luck whatever you
  decide!

On A Random Note: Has anyone seen the Brad Pitt/Harrison Ford movie "The
Devil's Own?" I saw it and really enjoyed it but it got some really bad
reviews over here that said it was a film that was very pro-IRA and
sympathetic to their cause (I didn't think it was like that at all). Any
  opinions out there?

  Susan
