I don't know if DD was the 'other recluse' but he does use the idea in
_MaoII_and I'm mighty fond of his _White Noise_. I don't know where he
ranks (as a professor I stopped ranking and cannonizing just to keep
reading...) in American Lit but I do know his ideas delight and challenge
me to better understand the america we live in...in other words, his eye
for cultural criticism is keen and his story telling is usually humorous
and well crafted. I think jds might enjoy DD's work since DD makes some
of the phoniness and insensitivity of american life part of his work in
every novel he's written. I also think it's likely that Salinger
influenced the character of Bill Gray in _MaoII_. It's ironic as I pull
the book from my shelf that a pynchon quote appears on the cover...here it
is:

"This novel's a beauty. DeLillo takes us on a breathtaking journey beyond
the official versions of our daily history, behind all easy assumptions
about who we're supposed to be, with a vision as bold and avoice as
eloquent and morally focused as any in American writing."

ps: I hope you feel cleaner!
