ESQUIRE article-- horrendous

(person from sao paulo, this is not a tirade against you, just a response
to the esquire article.)

I thought that the ESQUIRE article was absolutely horrendous.

I think the whole Salinger obsession-- the reason that people get
obsessed with him-- has to do with wanting to connect with Salinger, with
wanting to understand what he understands and how he understands; with a
desire to understand one's self through his work, and perhaps even
justify one's existence through his work. i don't think that the most
efficient way to accomplish this goal is through articles like the
esquire one. the MAN does not want to be bothered. he is not waiting for
someone to connect with him, not waiting for someone to write THE article
he's been waiting for so he can say "Yes! I have found my soul-mate!" he
obviously could connect with anyone he wants to.

the way to do it is through his work, the part of him that has remained
public. perhaps the lesson to be learned from "Hapworth..." (the Salinger
novella soon to be released in book form by a small publishing company)
is that Salinger wants us to learn from and connect with his art, not
with him. there is a difference between a speaker and a man.

if we all respect Salinger so much, why can't we respect his wishes for
privacy?

Not many people know that, but Sao Paulo is the third largest
city
in the world. I'm only mentioning that because I think it is bittrely
ironic
that, in a city with 20 million people, more than 3 thousand bars and
restaurants, around 30 huge shopping malls, I can't find ONE single
bookstore that can sell me an English edition of any of Salinger's works!
As a matter of fact, all I could ever find was the portuguese
version of the Catcher. Nothing against the portuguese language, quite
the
contrary, it is actually the most poetical and literary language one can
ask for (true story!) but I don't trust translations.
"Bananafish" was so surprisingly amazing that I DO want to read
ALL
about the Glass family and everything else, for that matter. If any of
you
guys can help me out....
Have any of you bought the "Esquire" magazine this month? It has
a
cover article on Salinger. I had to buy it, spent all my money on it (it
costed me the terrifying amount of U$7,50!!). I thought it was a good
article, though. Definitely enligtening for a clueless little girl such
as
myself.

Well, in an addicted culture I figure it's best to have a healthy
obsession
than an unhealthy one. Mine happens to be Altoids. In fact, sometimes my
Altoids have a race with my cigarettes. And in the last ten years I
daresay
I've turned many souls into Altoid junkies. Sorry God. :)

Malcs

*whispering* They even have a webpage, dontcha know? www.altoids.com.
