while carelessly roaming the various cable channels that i seem to pay for
but never have the time to experience, following a sunday evening basketball
game... i stumbled upon what i later discovered to be a weekly segment that
features phil jackson, the coach of the chicago bulls, in which he suggests
to his adoring fans a slim pickings of literature that he refers to as his
"books: the other channel club".
the reason why i write will become obvious rather shortly...

supposively his twin sons graduated this past friday at a suburban high
school outside the city limits which had his mind racing back to his high
school days in which he was forever turned on to the world of literature &
which he hopes to share with his family and friends-- the first book featured
in this particular segment was none other than (okay, stop holding your
breath...) catcher. he talked rather eloquently and long winded about holden
and his exploits as well as his sincere revrence toward the author. it was
pretty interessting to hear what he had to say actually... kind of moving--
he went on to show the hard cover that he had read that fateful year
(tattered and torn, as to be expected) and even shared with the interviewer
that he had bought a few copies for some of his players in the past (as seems
to be his custom of purchasing particular books for specific individuals
while on extended road trips-- more or less to probably keep those giant
children out of trouble...).
other books that he recommened on the broad cast i thought rather
interesting:
a separate piece, john knowles
catch 22, joesph heller
(and one of my all time favorites, actually) zorba the greek, kazantakis.

none of them got nearly as much air time as catcher which i thought rather
interesting.
thought i might share.

(how 'bout that north carolina kid last night..? pretty good shooter.)
