heh...eh, this is a bit Extreme, I think. The main problem with Time Magazine's attempt is that it's doomed to failure. NO MATTER WHO YOU CHOOSE you're gonna make some people angry and some people happy. AND YOU CAN NEVER CHOOSE RIGHT. I mean, come on, we do know that some authors have definitely been more influential than others, but among those that are influential, well, how can you choose between them? It doesn't bother me that they choose DWEMs and DWAMs (racist, elitist desginations concocted by the Self Righteous American Academia) because DWEMs and DWAMs have largely been the most influential writers in the English language so far this century, having come from the most educated, wealthy group. While Victim Literature has a great deal of value for social analysis, and oftentimes for inherent literary merit, the demographics of the thing kinda dictates that this literature will be marginalized by mainstream America (for example, Time Magazine) and less in influence than the authors Time did choose. These demographics are changing, of course, and a similar list made at the end of the next century will undoubtedly represent a much wider array of human experience. Academia,. for all it's faults, stupidities, self righteousness, and downright Not To Be Understood as Anything Else Freaking Ethnic Puritanism will ensure that to be the case, believe me... I mean, I just took the English Subject Test (GRE) and needed to be familiar with Countee Cullen (I was, a bit) and some Nigerian authors (I was not, unfortunately). The times they are a changing... Jim P.S. I'm not white. Not even close. But Pity that had to be said, you know?
