BANANAFISH: THE LIMERICK, 04/JUN/98

there once was a listserv just for jd
full of wonderful people, varied and free
but off topic posting was rampant
and the atmosphere dampened
so lots of people got quite pissed off about it and wrote irate emails like the
one that follows. well, just me actually.

-->

this list is not

- a punk rock forum. this discussion should be in private email. or please try
usenet. vent your opinions on alt.punk. or email malcolm about it. :) there are
three options presented for you. choose one.

- a poet's workshop. if you feel the need to share your work, please email it
to those who are interested. there are hundreds of people on this list, not all
of them even like poetry. you, too, should try usenet,
alt.arts.poetry.comments, or alt.teens.poetry.and.stuff. if you like, email
camille and nicely ask her about the proposed bananfish writers' workshop/book
club.

also, i would like to refer you a search engine that malcs recommended to the
list and that i have found very useful. http://www.metacrawler.com. this may be
helpful in finding forums/newsgroup/bbss/irc channels/listservs/websites and
other ways to meet people who share your passion for punkrock/poetry.

yes, this is a discussion list about the works of jd salinger.

yes, the threads sometimes evolve to be grossly off topic.

yes, sometimes people post off topic here, but if they have any clue, they
preface it with [OT].

yes, people come out with spontaneous poems, but usually it is prompted by
something in current affairs, or on the list, or is jd related.

yes, one of the great things about the list is its ability to embrace all
interests/ages/personalities, but in the context of their common love for the
work of one jd.

please don't stop writing poetry, and *NEVER* be afraid to share it, but WHERE
IT IS APPROPRIATE. i'm not commenting on the quality of anyone's poems, i am
merely stating (in the most reasonable manner that i'm capable of at the
moment) that this is not the place for huge exerpts.

to paraphrase good ole mr. a:

if poetry/punk is such a provocative subject, shouldn't you have contributed to
a list about it in the first place, *not* a list about jd salinger?

and don't forget holden's comeback:

'...lots of times you don't *know* what interests you the most until you start
talking about something that *doesn't* interest you most.'

but other than that, please don't let me offend. all flames in private email to
helenak@geocities.com

thank you for reading, thank you for listening.

goodnight.
