I was just reading F & Z for the first time in a surprisingly long while, and it struck me that the definition of Salinger's poetry comes from the mouth of Franny herself: `I know this much is all,' Franny said. `If you're a poet, you do something beautiful. I mean, you're supposed to *leave* something beautiful after you get off the page and everything.' This `something beautiful' seems to be analogous to that poetry between the lines I was talking about. I reccommend everyone who was in that string go back and have a read of `Franny' - appart from being an almost perfect short story it really is a text on Salinger's thoughts on spiritualism, academism and creativity.
