Hello, fisherpeople! I wanted to mention a June 16th event that you may be able to catch on the Web, if you have a browser and RealAudio and its companion programs. As many of you know, June 16th is the day Ulysses takes place, and each year we James Joyce fiends commemorate it with readings and events. This year, the Irish Times is sponsoring a global event that starts in Melbourne, Australia, and hits 18 cities (one city for each chapter of the book) throughout the day. I've been IMMERSED in getting the New York segment off the ground, where I will be reading with rather illustrious companions: the writer Frank McCourt, journalist Fintan O'Toole, actor Brian O'Byrne (whose current show, "The Beauty Queen of Leenan," just won a handful of awards in NY), and Joyce's great grandnephew, Paul Joyce. I apologize for sending this so late, but I literally have been consumed with this and another project, and in fact owe quite a few people on the list personal replies, which I've had to defer because of demands on my time. We, Melbourne, and Dublin will be on the Internet with live video and sound; the other fifteen cities will be providing sound, but not pictures. (Ah, but with JJ, the sound is what matters.) As Joyce says in Ulysses, we shall race ahead of the sun around the globe, and you can tune in at any point. You can also catch the archived recordings, in case you get this message too late to grab it as it happens. Our New York City segment takes place at 1pm US Eastern time. The entire program is detailed on web pages listed below. I hope you'll be able to join in and enjoy the lovely music that is in the text of Joyce. The global master site is: http://www.irish-times.com/globalreading/ (You can follow your nose from that point.) The master page for NY is at: http://www.irish-times.com/globalreading/newyork.html (There is supposed to be a pointer from there to the NYC web site.) Our NYC URL is: http://www.nyu.edu/acf/live/bloomsday/ ... which will feed you either sound or video + sound. You'll need the Real Audio software. (You can download it by clicking on the Real Audio link.) I hope you'll be able to catch some of it. Cheers! --tim o'connor
