I don't have the energy to find exact quotes, but Joseph Campbell reacted quite strongly to people expressing particularly strong views in favor of Socilaism or Capitalism, and Campbell pretty much moved with the Zeitgeist of thirties Socialism. He once also lectured his students at Sarah Lawerence concerning the jingoism of the WWII war effort. Then in the sixties, he completely disdained the anti-Vietnam activism taking place on campuses. He felt that to embrace one set of these ideals to the exclusion of the other wasto be particularly blind. The whole Us Vs.Them thing he spoke about consistently throughout his work. I think our good friend Buddy Glass told an anecdote about having a young girl tell him in a supermarket that her boyfriends were Dorothy and Robert. It's about unlearning the differences, buddy... I am a bit tired of these political flame wars going on here ( and I'm sure I'm inviting another one just by saying so), but it seems antithetical to the JD Salinger newsgroup to be talking in such hard terms about various political philosophies to the exclusion of the others. I'm down with Christ, and I don't see a lot of that Christ consciousness inherrent in Marxism or Capitalism ( please I can't endure another explanation of why Christ was a Communist, Andrew) So let's talk about Acting with all your heart or Writing as Religion. If som of you wish to continue discourse along these lines, I'm sure there are places for it. peace, Robert > From: J J R <jrovira@juno.com> > To: bananafish@lists.nyu.edu > Subject: Re: Clarifications > Date: Monday, June 22, 1998 10:38 PM > > <<On this point, it is good to know that somebody out there on this list > at > least thinks that capitalism 'can' be an oppressive system.
