Erinn,
Of the books you listed, I'd recommend 1984, Lord of the Flies, I Know Why 
The Caged Bird Sings, and any of the Kerouac. Kafka and Wilde might be good 
too. In addition, I recommend a terrific contemporary novel by John Irving 
called A Prayer for Owen Meany. It's not a "classic," but it's as good as 
any of the books you listed, and it will give you a good laugh after you 
read some of the heavier books. And what about The Confederacy of Dunces by 
John Kennedy Toole for the same reason?
