Now, Tolkien is not what we would consider children's lit, but having
read it in 5th grade, having been changed forever by the epiphany-clusters
that Lord of the Rings sent a-spinning ... well, we just couldn't imagine
growing up without it, in any language. BTW, Legolas was the greatest
character BY FAR (:
One of the reasons that Salinger meant so much was that it was the
first time we had ever read a kind of ... modern, literary work that moved us
the way Tolkien's high fantasy had -- so in a very real way, Salinger opened
wide the entire world of lit, at least in this corner. And Tolkien prepared
the way for Salinger. Isn't it nice the way things work out? (:
