Try Fear & Loathing on the Campaign Trail.  Great stuff.  I love Thompson 
because he reminds me, in a very in-your-face way, not to trust the 
illusions that others set up around me.  Pynchon does this in a more 
high-brow way, as does Rand, but it's important to me to remember to 
question everything, & HST does it in a most audacious way.
I'm sorry, can't hang with Wolfe.  It seem to me the only thing he's saying 
is: "I'm Tomas Wolfe.  Shut up and get me a double martini."
He's just WAY to in love with himself.
