I have to pass two language exams. They consist of translating about one
page of text, and you're given three hours to do it. I had two years of
spanish in HS, three semesters in college, grew up hearing spanish spoken in
my home all my life, read through my old spanish textbook twice preparing for
the exam, and it still took me all three hours to translate that one page.
Imagine having to look up almost every word. I did have to translate a page
of literary criticism, but it was still just one page.

I have to do a second language now, and it can be either French, Italian or
German. I'm going with Italian just because I like Calvino and Eco. I'd be
smarter to go with French or German, but I'm obviously so decrepit learning
languages that I'd better stick with something easier, and I've heard the
transition between Italian and Spanish isn't that bad.

I'm going to audit two undergrad italian classes then take the second exam at
the end of the school year. All I have to struggle through is one page. I
know I can do it ;)

But now you got me thinking, take German so you can read Rilke :)

I don't know :) I don't think so. :)
