Hello everyone,
I've been so busy with this hometest from Cooper Union, and the catching up
on schoolwork I missed, and some other things that I simply haven't had a
chance to say anything lately, or read all the posts. I would go back and
reply to all the things I found interesting, but I think I won't since it
would take more time than I've got. I would like to say, though, that there
have been a lot of interesting discussions over the past few weeks.

What I would like to ask is whether anyone has heard about David Eggers, and
his book "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" I went to a lecture the
author was doing last weekend, and he is amazing. I'm only about half-way
through the book, but I must say it is wonderful. There's this preface, 40
pages I think, starting with rules for the enjoyment of this book, followed
by various comments on things like dialog, omissions, discussion and even a
flow chart of the themes in the book, and a list of metaphors. Oh, and a
lovely line drawing of a stapler. It's a really amazing book, and I find
myself thinking of Salinger. He said originally he wanted the cover to be
white with black block letters but the publisher didn't like that idea. I
loved that thought. He writes like Salinger does sometimes, for example
there is this one chapter where I swear I couldn't help but think of "This
Sandwich has no mayonaise" as far as the construction of the thoughts, this
back and forth between worrying about his brother and facing what is in
front of him. I'm sorry this is so eternally long, but I'm just wondering if
anyone else has opinions on this book. I would definitly recommend it.
Catherine
