    Hello TLM!,

Lovely story, that, and so nice that you were not interupted
by any phone calls from intoxicated junior lawyers...

As for Manhattan rentals a quick search on altavista (www.altavista.com)
    using the search criteria:
    +manhattan + apartment +rentals
produced many web sites specializing in apartment searches.

Some had promising names, such as
    citihabitats.com
    www.nyrealty.com
    www.manhattanre.com
    www.manhattanlodgings.com

so you might take a look.

Good luck, though once you see the cost, you might end up in
New Jersey after all. If you plan on being near Columbia U.,
then places in norther NJ are quite close, such as Fort Lee
(right across the river) and many other communities
which have bus access to Manhattan (the trains are also a possibility,
but they enter Manhattan a few miles to the south). I believe that
a good web search could turn something up, but I have to imagine
that it is not easy renting an apartment from a few thousand miles
    away.

    all the best,
    Mattis
