Yeah. She never pretended to be any more or less - that's why I like her. I was watching a documentary on Andy Warhol the other day, and I remember thinking: are these people the ultimate in real or the ultimate in phoniness? Is there something inherently phony in running around saying how phony everything is? How can someone who rushes around telling everyone how genuine they are truly be genuine? By entering one state you negate the other. It's like looking in a mirror and trying not to catch sight of yourself.

Similar question could be asked of either Patti Smith or JD Salinger. If there is one great thing that both `Catcher' and (yes) `American Beauty' share is the fact that everyone's a phony and no-one is. I read Victor Bokris' biography of Patti Smith recently and couldn't believe how competitive and ambitious everyone was - how they appeared to fall into a position of cult fame which they did in actuality fight tooth and nail for. I must admit I felt more cheated to find that out than if I would be if I heard that the Spice Girls were miming all their stuff. Except for the fact that they're such awful singers that thye couldn't possibly be ;)
