I often speculate on where and who Holden would be should his story have occured just ten years before or ten years after it was set. Just imagine if Holden had been travelling through New York even in 1955, by which time Rock and Roll had been invented and the piano player at old Ernie's bar would have been totally passe, not to mention 1965 or 1975. In some ways, the culture of the 60s would have had a lot more to offer a guy like Holden - and I think in a way it's the fact that there were so many people like him in the 1950s that is the reason why the 60's happened in the first place.

More thanks for random acts of gallantry, by the way! ;)
