I think the kindest thing that anybody can do ("Close on the heels of
kindness, originality is one of the most thrilling things in the world, also
the most rare!") is give away a book. I have given away countless copies of
CATCHER, ON THE ROAD, PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST.... and I know that those I have
given to often give those same copies to others.
So don't be sad that you've given Holden away -- because most of all you
have GIVEN him to someone and he will be forever passed on!
