    I assumed Matt would hate him on the principle that
    more than two days' exposure to Oxford turns all homespun
    hill-billies into dandy-lynching Anglophobes (see J.F.B.Clinton.)
    
    I thought you, having been already already innoculated
    with haggis-juice, would have known better. But no. I should
    have remembered that colonials too - with all that embarassing
    flaunting of what they naively think of as their 'Celtic' roots -
    are just as brutish, just as vulnerable, just as sullenly resentful,
    just as blind to the subtleties, the elegancies, the ironies of those
    Artistocrats of Nature, the ENGLISH.

    (Although as a Welshman, Powell - like myself - had effectively
    suppressed those unfortunate features of having belonged, originally,
    to a fringe people.)
