For all of you who are frantically attempting to leave this
list, please remember that the only way it will work is to send
your mail to:

and to say, IN THE BODY OF THE MESSAGE:

        unsubscribe bananafish
or unsubscribe bananafish-digest

That last depends on which list you're on. If you don't do it
the right way, you won't get off the list promptly. And it will
have to wait for me to get to it, whenever I get to it.

The person who opined about "egos and racists" isn't here any
longer to get this response, but while there are many things to
concern us, I would have to say that racism and egotism are not
the qualities that most worry me.

I don't want to say more than that, because I find that this
week has been dismaying at best. By this point, many people I
cared about are gone, which makes me sad. There are still some
subscribers who remain here and are dear to me, and for them I
am grateful, but I am weary of all this nastiness. Don't you
people have stuffed animals and unbeloved relatives to take it
all out on? Much better than sending it here, if you care for
one more reader's opinion.

And I hold nothing against a good knock-down, drag-out argument,
either. Just that I'd rather see it take place elsewhere. Oh,
it's a tricky course to navigate, yes it is, and I know it
cannot be simply reduced to "Can't we all just get along?" I
like this list enough that I want to see it thrive, not fall
down under the weight of venom. Maybe that is why, more and
more, I'm simply tuning out what comes in. Sorry, folks, that's
how I react to the nastiness.
