theoretically speaking

The literary theory threads are now more or less a recurring debate on
this list. Jim and John O. have stood in defense and explanation of a
handful of prominent issues and figures in contemporary theory. I've
consistently been impressed with their patience and with the care and
skill that characterizes their posts.

Also remarkable generally is the activity on this list right now. I've
never before so much enjoyed just being a reader of posts. There are
some sharp voices here--full of wit and intelligence.

Which makes it all the more frustrating to see some of you apparently so
committed to being anti-theory that when presented with a tidy, sensible
(I dare say friendly) argument-summary, you dismiss it.

There's a difference between being uninterested in theory and being
anti-theory. Being uninterested is baffling enough, as typically, the
ideas being kicked around by the academic fringe play a big part in the
shaping of emergent (and eventually, dominant) culture in the west.
Still, not all things interest all people. No argument there.

But being anti-theory as a matter of principle--particularly when
coupled with claims of simple uninterest--is silly. Silly coming from
people who have a demonstrable affection for inquiry and ideas
generally. Perhaps what you're opposed to isn't the ideas themselves,
but the baggage attached to them and the people and social contexts via
which they're presented. Fair enough.

The result--discussions of ideas degenerate (however deliciously) into
arguments between personalities--is worth something in its own right as
spectacle. But therein is lost an opportunity to explore new
perspectives on language and life. A sentiment perhaps too earnest to
pass as honest, coming from me, but I'll stand by it. Jim and John
aren't posturing and name-dropping; they're genuinely interested in what
they study, and they appear willing to share.
