Some are fighting the culture war by attacking windmills and straw men.
Derrida isn't a huge figure outside theological circles, and again,
denying authorial intent as the basis of textual meaning comes from guys
who did see the text as a self contained entity, and comes from the 40s,
from people we'd consider pretty conservative now. It's not a Derridean
or even relativist move. They just saw the author as more of a moving
target than the actual words on the page.
