Thanks for posting all of this -- honestly, I'd never considered all of
these possibilities before.

I'd always read this as a parable about a man who seeks answers but is
defeated by his own limitations. Sort of like Mr. Ramsay's inability to
get past his philosophical letter "R". (See the first section of Virginia
Woolf's *To the Lighthouse* to understand this reference.)

Of course, it confounds me, as does most of what Kafka wrote. I find I
must be knocking on my own metaphorical gate.
