'the author's text'

as someone who reads only one language, something nags
at me when i'm reading kafka or rilke or
take-your-pick.

and this is: i'm not *really* reading kafka; i'm
reading kafka's translator.

so when we are talking about 'the author's text',
wouldn't that only hold true if we are reading the
text in the author's language?
