I think it is not at all implied that painters' contribution is any
less legit or anything. (cf: JDS' obvious regard for Van Gogh)
 
If there were no Gutenburg, printing, DTP etc. and we relied only on
handwritten manuscripts, the situation, I guess, would be placed in
perspective. In effect, a painter's sign on a painting is like an author's
name on a book, I think.
