<<Now, what should we make of the story reported on this list some months
back about some actor getting JDS' autograph for his fiancee? Apocryphal,
huh?>>

Say hey. I wasn't on the list when the story was reported, so if I'm
being redundant, pardon.

The story I heard was that Nick Cage asked X. (an actress who's name
escapes me) upon meeting her the first time. After a short period of
wooing, she gave him a list of nearly impossible tasks--one of which was to
get Salinger's autograph.

Nick Cage, the buzzy bastard that he is, bought a Salinger letter (which
was likely signed) from a rare book dealer and gave it to her. Not an
autograph per se, but enough of one to justify a Hollywood marriage.

On topic: I went to the University of Texas at Austin, and there are a
number of Salinger manuscripts in the Henry Ransom Center (the rare books
collection). I'm not entirely certain who's allowed to see them. I think
anyone enrolled can get access, but some of you might try writing to the
library for copies. I'll round up the address and post it later.
