Geezh, I feel like I just witnessed a train wreck. I'm deleting all of the
messages of the last few days. Clean slate. I think it's time to dispense
with all of the negative energy here.

I have a topic. Has anyone ever read "The Way of a Pilgrim," the book about
the Jesus Prayer that Franny is obsessing on? Or its companion piece "The
Pilgrim Continues his Way." Perhaps I find this so interesting because I
grew up attending an Eastern Orthodox church, and there were quite a few
people with the particular look and attitude of the Pilgrim there. But it's
fascinating to look at him and think that his whole life was just wandering
around from place to place, intersecting with coincidence and trying to
discover how to pray without ceasing. It's not hard to understand why
Franny was attracted to it. It may have been for all the wrong reasons, it
may have been a withdrawal from her present circumstances, but her
intention was pure. Misguided, but pure. And you discover that praying
without ceasing can only come when every action, every word, every thought
in your life becomes pure, and by becoming so, beomes a prayer. That's how
you do it for the fat lady. Your entire life becomes a ceaseless prayer
directed at the fat lady. Just don't neglect to recognize a consecrated cup
of chicken soup along the way. --mark
