Andrew Berube wrote a good piece in academe about 6 -12 months ago but I
don't have it now--louis Menand echoed some of berube's good ideas in "How
to make a phd matter" in the ny times magazine section, 9/22/96...I find
this thread relevant to my field (higher ed) and am not a typical "gray
beard" in that I have done things to chnage it and I have been on the
wrong side of "tenure track" for 8 years before finishing my phd so I'm
saying even when I was poor (no savings/no health ins/no pension) and
teaching, I didn't expect life to be fair. I expected more of myself if I
wanted change...being fair to oneself demands no less. will
