I don't see how soldier x could feasibly be either seymour or buddy. seymour
has no older brother, and buddy's older brother (seymour) certainly would not
be asking him to bring home "swastikas" for the kids, even if seymour had kids.
another thing: i don't know how appropriate it is to be constantly trying to
connect all of jds's stories together. i mean, everything he writes doesn't
necessarily have to be about the same people or the same family. sure, he does
focus on characters he likes (i.e. the glass family) but that doesn't mean he
makes all of his characters (albeit disguised otherwise) members of the glass,
caulfield, or gladwaller families. what about the main character in "the young
folks"? (sorry, i can't remember her name.) should we spark a debate to try
and figure out if she is boo boo or franny or bessie? i agree, there are
thematic connections to be made, but just don't force them.
