There are a lot of minor indiscretions in the novel where Holden seems to forget his exact audience, and seems to take on the voice of an author at a typewriter...such as the instances of staccato dialogue...I used to wonder, "How does the analyst know who's saying what?" Later I just learned to ignore it. It seems that exposing Holden's relationship to New York was more important than his relationship with the audience.
