I feel it any time I'm with my two-year-old nephew...I feel the need to 
protect him from profanity, but no so much the profanity of language as 
the profanity of bigotry and ignorance, of hate and violence.  It's a 
helpless, terrifying feeling, and I don't suggest it to anyone.  But 
yes, Holden expresses that haplessness pretty well.
