I'm going to jump in here with my hunting hat pov
When i was a small child I had a whole collection of hats encompassing ten
gallon cowboy hats, fedoras, fishing hats, greek fisherman caps, baseballl
hats, engineer hats, aviator hats, and union soldier hats. It was a great
thrill to get up every morning and chose the most oulandish hat on my bedpost
to take on the world in. It wasn't so much a dress up thing so much as the
adoption of a different world view every day. I was constanly dismayed at how
I wasn't being taken very seriously by the adults in my world. The hats gave
me an edge of detatchment, by allowing me to hide behind a floppy brim.
Although I still have a hat on my head more often that not, the attatchment to
the real eye grabbers was a thing of my youth.
In general I have a rather dim view of Holden, and I've always thought
that the hunting cap was merely a manifestation of his immaturity. This may
be filtered through my own youthful exuberence for a good red hunting cap, but
I can't help tsk, tsking when I read about Holden's attatchment to his.
                                                    Best,
                                                         Robert
