I'm not, myself, any sort of rabid Janeite - I belong to the Austen list mainly because they make even easier tease bait than bananafish - but I'm still slightly surprised by Brendan's: `...sort of apoplectic response to Jane Austen...' Off hand one can think of a couple of points shared by the two writers. They both engage the problem of conducting oneself with an empathetic concern for others. They restrict their canvases to small, somewhat priviledged corners of society. They like to give their readers a bit of a laugh - though Jane's jokes are admittedly more acid. With such highly idiosyncratic styles, they would both seem to be obsessed with language. And so on... What's the problem, Brendan ? Is it the hats ? Scottie B.
