Perhaps it's a cultural background issue.  In the US, you see,
"hurling" is not a sport, but an impassioned style of vomiting.  When
one of our unsuspecting bretheren from overseas encounters, by turns
and blunders, the difference between Irish hurling and US hurling, he
is deeply scarred and thereafter often unwilling to fraternize, in
discussion of competitive sports, with Americans.
