the saying referred to here is "changing horses in mid-stream"  which 
means to change your methods when you are right in the middle of the 
battle.  here X sees that esme is affronted by his suggestion that her 
father was wrong, so he decides not to address that issue any further.

pretty sure it stands for Army Post Office.  very sure that it's a long 
code of numbers and letters, kind of like a personal address given to 
everyone in the US military.  it ensures that the person will get 
his/her mail no matter where he/she is stationed.

well, as for the implications of this statement, im not going to touch 
it, being a few years since i read esme completely, but as i understand 
it faculties are common biological attributes, such as sight and mental 
stability and having all of your limbs attached to your body, X being a 
soldier you can see her concern.
