Bruce: though not initially my own "discovery," I have long held that
"Uncle Wiggily" is in many ways a re-telling of "The Dead." The
parallels are striking--possibly even more striking than those between
"Bfish" and "Teddy."

Why *didn't* Salinger ever mention Joyce? He must have read him. For a
person who liked Eliot so well, it seems unlikely he would have had no
early exposure to JJ. Perhaps _Ulysses_ put him off.
