Today's American English majors usually aren't hearty enough for
_Ulysses_. They stick to Pound and Eliot, when they are men, and to
Woolf, when they are women. As far as I can tell, it's the computer
science people who, sensing the challenge in "Proteus," decide to stick
it out. You know, though, there's plenty of time to soak through the
book before Bloomsday this year. Perhaps even time to make travel plans
for Dublin. Rest assured Scottie won't attend, but I'll be there,
mirror, bowl and razor.
