I've been taking AP tests, and reading _Heart of Darkness_ between
them. This particular copy of mine has commentary from several literary
figures, one of whom being Ernest Hemingway. I don't particularly give
a damn how (ir)relevent it is, I'm posting a selection:
It is agreed by most of the people I know that Conrad is a
bad writer, just as it is agreed that T.S. Eliot is a good
writer. If I knew that by grinding Mr. Eliot into a fine
dry powder and sprinkling that powder over Mr. Conrad's grave
Mr. Conrad would shortly appear, looking very annoyed at the
forced return, and commence writing I would leave for London
early tomorrow morning with a sausage grinder. . .
I, for one, get an immense kick out of that no matter how many times I
read it.
As an aside, a few of the fellows at school and I have been entertaining
ideas of getting a bunch of t-shirts and bumper stickers made. The idea
is to spoof the 'WWJD?' ('What Would Jesus Do?') line of products with a
'WWHD?' line of our own. I'll give you three guesses what the 'H' is to
stand for.
