Yes! From what I've been told privately via mail, people frequently
drop anchor at the archives and browse quite a bit before joining. Some
subscribe only after putting the proverbial periscope up a bit. Others
prefer to read a whole month's worth of messages and get their fix that
way; they don't want so much to write as they do to read.

No tie between search and person! I'd be able to show actual machines
and what files they retrieve, but I refuse to do that -- too intrusive
and too apt to invade privacy. We just capture top-level domains (TLD)
and next-level domains (e.g., something.ibm.com, but not
"johndoe@computer.something.ibm.com"). So, you can take off your false
whiskers and fake Heidelberg duelling scar. 8-)
