I've often speculated on that. We once got a huge number of hits from
someone in the Cornish area, from an Internet service provider there.

As one person pointed out to me, some number of those hits are from
search engines. Which of course means that a search on, say,
www.google.com gets a lot of results, which leads, one hopes, to more
readers.
