Pedophile, podophile...what's the difference, really? Maybe it's
Salinger's greatest implied pun. Seymour kisses Sybil's foot (a la
Raskolnikov?), but he hates his own feet. A pedophiliac podophobe.
I would think a look in the archives might turn up something on this
subject, because I'm sure it's been discussed, even recently. However,
a search on "foot" found nothing, as did a search on "feet," while a
random seach for "cheese" found 69 entries, and even "toenail" turned up
5.
