Thanks so much for presenting the perspective of your son Mark.
It is doubling startling in the way that in the first place it fits
like a custom made key, and secondly that in how many years of discussing
this story I do not recall anyone viewing it in terms of pure
post-combat reaction. I think I might be a little more certain that
you (plural) have hit the bull's eye had the story been structured
more like For Esme.. which really brings the war into the foreground,
whereas in A Perfect Day.. there is only the hint, as though Salinger
expected everyone to be as perceptive as your son, or perhaps to be as
familiar with this type of breakdown, which might have been the case
forty-plus years ago.
