I thought some people might find this news item interesting. :-)

May 1, 2001 - WORLD WIDE WEB - It was no surprise today as the consistent
leader, Martin Caulfield's collage, won The Catcher in the Rye Art Contest,
garnering US$15 in prize money.
Though Siri Klemetsaune's pink concept was narrowing the lead over the
past several days, this did not alter the end result. A total of 85 votes
were tallied. Caulfield's piece claimed 24 votes, or 28 percent of the
vote. Klemetsaune's claimed 21, a close second place. However, the
competition had no second place prize. (The news clipping placed at a
distant third place with 11 votes.)
In a surprising revelation, four of the pieces were created by one
artist: Bernd Wahlbrinck, a German. His neighbors described him to
reporters as quiet and warm. Wahlbrinck said, "[Morine] insisted on
anonymity if people like me wanted to contribute something. ... I was so
enchanted by the whole thing."
Investigating officials concluded that the deft and multiple hiding of
identity for the art contest fell entirely within its rules. However, the
repercussions within the idiosyncratic Catcher art community are yet to be
seen.
